About the Event

In this 90-minute webinar, Centropa and Memory Project Productions team up to demonstrate how you can powerfully use Holocaust stories and images to teach empathy, compassion, and observation skills. Learn how drawing portraits of Holocaust victims and survivors deepens your students’ relationship to history.

If possible, we encourage you to attend with colleagues—English Language Arts,  Social Studies, Art, and/or Spanish teachers from the same school, for example—so that together you can create an interdisciplinary learning experience about the Holocaust, art, and memory for your students.

Join us for an out-of-the-box PD workshop combining Centropa’s photographs of 20th c. Jewish life in Central and Eastern Europe with the Memory Project Productions’ creative approach to teaching about tragedy, survival, and resilience through

Holocaust stories, photographs, and art.

Who are we?

Centropa, a historical institute based in Vienna, asked elderly Jews in 15 European countries to tell us their entire life stories spanning the 20th century as they showed us their old family photographs. We did not use video or focus on the Holocaust. Teachers use our 22,000 old photographs, 1200 interviews, and short multimedia films to create the lessons they need for the students they teach. Our materials cost nothing.

Memory Project Productions is an internationally recognized Holocaust education organization, that brings people inside the creative process while addressing themes of loss, love, and resilience through a portrait-making/storytelling activity that cultivates empathy, persistence and risk-taking.
